Provably Fair vs Traditional RNG — What Actually Differs
Compare provably fair gaming vs traditional RNG — commit–reveal, HMAC-SHA256 verification, and what each trust model does and does not prove.

Provably fair vs traditional RNG is a trust-model question: can a player re-check their round, or only trust a closed generator (and maybe a lab certificate for the class of RNG)?
This comparison is for operators and technical readers evaluating VFairGames. It does not rehash the full how-to — for that see What is provably fair? and How to verify a result.
Side-by-side
| Traditional RNG | Provably fair (VFairGames model) | |
|---|---|---|
| Trust model | Operator claim and/or lab audit of the RNG system | Player can recompute each round from public inputs |
| When outcome is fixed | Opaque to the player | Committed before the bet via server seed hash |
| Player role | None in the RNG | Client seed (plus nonce) feeds the digest |
| Typical check | Certificate / audit report | Reveal seed → recompute HMAC-SHA256 → match UI |
| Common product fit | Studio slots, live tables | Operator “originals” (Dice, Mines, Limbo, Plinko, Keno) |
Many studio slots and live games rely on certified RNG without per-round player verification. Provably fair is most common on originals where the mapping rules can be published.
What “provably fair” actually promises
- Commit to secret randomness (hash of the server seed).
- Combine with client seed and nonce under a published algorithm (HMAC-SHA256 on VFairGames).
- Reveal the server seed so anyone can recompute.
Promise: detectable honesty for that round’s generation. If the hash or recompute fails, manipulation is visible.
What neither model proves by itself
Whether you use a lab-certified RNG or commit–reveal:
- RTP can still be stingy or generous — that is a payout config question (configurable RTP)
- Wallets can still fail to pay — that is settlement trust
- Licensing and responsible gaming still sit outside the hash
VFairGames does not claim a lab certificate in place of verification. It ships verifiable originals plus verify.vfair.games.
When operators pick which
- Prefer provably fair originals when support wants “here are the seeds; recompute,” and players expect crypto-casino transparency.
- Prefer studio RNG products when you need third-party content libraries that do not expose per-round seeds.
- Many platforms run both — VFairGames covers the originals lane with a partner wallet you own (integrate).

FAQ
Is provably fair “more random” than certified RNG?
Not the useful question. The difference is who can check a single round. Randomness quality and regulatory audits are separate topics.
Does HMAC-SHA256 replace licensing?
No. It is a technical fairness story for published game mappings.
Can players verify without trusting VFairGames servers?
The public tool recomputes in the browser from the seeds you paste. You still need the revealed server seed (after rotation) and the published mapping.
